What Does a Verra Carbon Credit Consultant Actually Do?

Verra’s Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) is the world’s most widely used standard for voluntary carbon credits. Credits issued under it are called Verified Carbon Units, or VCUs. But the path from “we have a forest” to “we have VCUs to sell” is long, technical and full of documentation. That is where a Verra carbon credit consultant comes in.

The VCS project cycle, step by step

1. Feasibility and methodology selection. The consultant assesses whether your project is eligible and which Verra methodology applies. For forest projects, Verra’s consolidated REDD methodology (VM0048) and IFM or ARR methodologies are common choices. The wrong methodology choice can cost years.

2. Project listing. The project is listed on the Verra registry with its basic details, making it publicly visible.

3. Project Description (PD). This is the core technical document. It sets out the project boundary, baseline scenario, additionality, leakage, permanence and non-permanence risk, monitoring plan and stakeholder consultation. Writing a strong PD is one of the most important services a consultant provides.

4. Validation. An independent Validation/Verification Body (VVB) audits the PD against the VCS rules. The consultant manages the audit and responds to findings.

5. Registration. Once validation is complete, Verra reviews and registers the project.

6. Monitoring and verification. The project collects data according to its monitoring plan and prepares a monitoring report. A VVB verifies the emission reductions or removals.

7. VCU issuance. Verra issues VCUs to the project’s registry account, ready for sale or retirement.

Adding CCB and other labels

Many forest projects also pursue the Climate, Community & Biodiversity (CCB) Standards, which recognise strong community and biodiversity outcomes. These labels can increase buyer interest and price.
